The suicide rate in India was very high in the past decades. Even Now India at 12th place in suicide cases according to the official
reports and available data cases are decreasing.In the year 2000, the percentage of suicidal cases was 17 in total and among them 17.50 was male and 16.40 was female. It decreased
by 1% only in the year 2001 and in 2002, it remained the same.
Although, from the year 2003 to 2008 it was stuck to 15%, and in the year 2009
to 2012 the percentage was 14, 13% in 2013. According to data, it is reduced to 12% in 2014 and the same till the year 2019.
the suicide rate has been rising over the last five decades.The percentage of suicidal acts is shared by Maharashtra which is 13% and Tamil Nadu is the second highest in suicide cases. Gujrat and Telangana

According to the NCRB reports of 2019 suicide death among young people were 93,061 and it increased as compared to 2018 which was 89,407

Punishment
Suicide is punishable under Indian law. Indian penal code, section 309 prescribes simple imprisonment punishment for a term of 1 year
for an attempt to commit suicide. It means a person who commits suicide and failed in his attempt can be punished under this

The Supreme court of India recommended Parliament delete this section in the years 2011 and 2014. But this provision is still enacted.
Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code, is also related to suicide. In this section, the person who abetted suicide is punished
under this section.

Not only in India but in many other countries suicide is punishable under sharia law. In about 20 countries, it is penalized. Children can also be
tried and punished for attempting suicide.
In Nigeria, a child of seven years can be punished under the law for committing suicide.
Making suicide criminalizing is not inhibit the person to end his life, but deters the people from helping the injured person, because

Instead of putting the person in jail, Government should provide free counseling and other help to the person.
